24. Rochelle Jordan – 1021
The modern-day Aaliyah, Rochelle Jordan, released her digital album 1021 in 2014. The 13 song album was entirely carried by her soothing, airy vocals sans one feature from IamSu. This album hovers over some of the most pacifying, ambient production that you will hear in your lifetime, and it helps ROJO show why she is one of the front-runners in the alternative R&B movement.
23. Luke James – Luke James
Luke James has been in the music industry for quite some time, but his proper major label debut was released this year via Island Records. The self-titled project offered listeners to some of the best contemporary R&B in recent memory, mixed with some hip-hop bass lines and some very noticeable influences throughout the album. The songwriting on the album is very emotional and dark, but that is why Luke has the chance to take R&B by the horns and call it his own. While this album didn’t feature enough pure R&B for Luke to take that title right now, it doesn’t mean that this wasn’t a damn good debut album.
