23. Travi$ Scott – Days Before Rodeo

Travi$ Scott Days Before Rodeo

I came into this project with an open mind and I also came in with the belief that Travis had produced this whole project himself. I came out of my first listen with a high appreciation for the production specifically but I soon learned that Travis did barely any of it. So what does this guy do? He’s not a good rapper, all his features outshined him and he didn’t even do the beats. BUT, the project was pretty damn good regardless. “Sloppy Toppy” features one of my favorite beats of the year, Skyfall is a trip and Zombies is really dope. Sonically, this project was just very pleasing to me. There’s very little value here but ultimately, I liked the sounds.

22. thestand4rd – thestand4rd

thestand4rd

thestan4rd is the quartet of Minnesota natives, Spooky Black, Allan Kingdom, Bobby Raps and Psymun. I found all of these guys individually very early in their careers. I was a fan of Bobby Raps back when he was in the group Audio Perm, I caught Psymun’s music in my inbox I believe like a year or two ago and I’ve been a fan since, Allan Kingdom was a Sunday Discovery feature and Spooky Black’s buzz nipped me in the ass on the KanyeToThe forums. It was awesome seeing them come together to drop a song together a few months ago and at that moment I knew, something greater was coming. That was this album. This free album. They’re all just some young, talented friends from Minnesota so this project felt so natural. And this project came off as a fun project. That’s what it is, something fun for people to jam to.
