Young Hustlaz – Still YH (Mixtape)

Don’t sleep on this tape! Still YH may very well be my sleeper pick for 2013, but man am I hoping I’m wrong — this tape needs to start picking up some more acclaim before the year is done. Representing Oakland, California, Young Hustlaz is a 4 man group made up of Young Gully, A.B., Lil Chris, and Young D. Truthfully, I don’t recognize anyone in the group except Young Gully, whose Hustla Movement series has garnered him acclaim throughout the Bay Area, including also being named to Thizzler’s 2011 Bay Area Top 10 Freshman list.

While Gully does seem to head the group throughout Still YH, there’s no way he could carry an entire group project by himself; in a 4 man group, I don’t care who you are, if your counterparts are terrible, what’s the point? This is exactly where Young Hustlaz succeed,  as every individual here came together almost as if none of them would allow themselves to be out done by the next. Verse after verse, each of these guys work towards crafting a personal look into the rough streets of East Oakland, and it all finally culminates in the song “Realest Shit Ever,” a track in which personal struggles, frustration, and dreams are all revealed in a succession of powerful verses.

Going in over some smooth, slapping production, Still YH surprised the hell out of me. Clocking in at around 70 minutes, 17 tracks in total, I wouldn’t have expected to hear something that’s THIS addicting. A mix between introspective tracks and some hype tracks, Still YH never feels like a stretch. There could be maybe a few songs that could have been left off, but there’s no songs on here that had me thinking “skip.” Great tape.
