Kanye West Freestyles At The Opening Of Fat Beats in ’96 (Video)

The late 90’s was when an underground scene was really beginning to blossom as the mainstream slowly lost credibility. This scene is possibly my favorite to date and in attendance at Fat Beats, the exclusively hip hop record store included ILL BILL, Lord Finesse, Adagio, Breeze Brewin, A.L. Skills, Percee P, J-Live, Mr. Live, Chino XL, Al Tariq, Black Attack, Xzibit, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Rawcotiks, Ak Skills, Rob Swift, Roc Raida, DJ Spinna, and many others. But most importantly, a young 19-year-old kid from Chicago by the name of Kanye West was there. At this point, he was still grinding as a producer and just getting his first placement on an actual retail album. This may have even been his first trip to New York but he was well versed and trying to get everyone he could to listen to him rap.

Big shouts to DJ Eclipse for liberating this footage.
