On July 4, 2013, I officially became of Jarell Perry after hearing his track ‘4th of July’, which I then discovered I had downladed but not listened to his first project, Simple Things. That project ended up becoming my fourth favorite mixtape of 2013.

2014 had Jarell teasing the world with leaks and remakes of songs, but he let us hear his follow-up to Simple Things in March with the release of his digital EP, WHITE. The EP has seven songs, all produced by HSVN & with one feature from Chuck Inglish, & Jarell’s gleaming somber, confused vibes are evident throughout the project. The opener of the EP – ‘Black Valentine’ – is arguably the strongest song on the project, with Jarell trying to win a girl in a very dark fashion. The whole entire EP features gloomy vibes similar to the opener that are over simmering synths and quite a few hand claps (seriously), but sometimes you need to get the darkness out of you to see the light.
