Rhythmic & Urban Radio Update (January 27, 2015)

In 2015, the staff at Fashionably-Early will be bringing our audience more industry news that isn’t easily accessible to the normal music fan. These updates of the industry should give our audience more knowlege on the industry and help them stay ahead of the curve. Today, we are starting with a new radio update for the rhythmic & urban formats. We will highlight new songs picked as singles from artist’s albums & notably radio news before breaking down into specific updates on rhythmic & urban radio. We will present you with the top five records on each format, and then miscellaneous movings throughout the top 50, as well as current & future adds on the format. If you want to know more information than what is given, hit the comments section below.

First off, lets begin with Tinashe. The third and presumably final radio single from her debut album Aquarius will be ‘All Hands On Deck’. This was confirmed by a songwriter of the single, Bebe Rexha. While this news isn’t a real surprise, it sure is slightly disappointing and reaffirms the fact that RCA Records is trying to push Tinashe more towards the singles market. If the album was promoted with different singles and to the modern R&B audience, Tinashe‘s album would have sold more & her career would probably be in a better spot. Nonetheless, the single should have a nice livelihood as a potential crossover record.

The Rhythmic radio format is always a fun one to look at, & this week’s update features a ton of major moves. Usher‘s ‘I Don’t Mind’ with Juicy J sits at #1 by over 1,000 spins, while Ne-Yo‘s ‘She Knows’ (also featuring Juicy J) sits at #2 after gaining 500+ spins. Rounding out the top five in Ariana Grande & The Weeknd, Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars (up over 1,000 spins!), & Big Sean & E-40. Nicki Minaj has two songs in the top 16, as ‘Only’ sits at #7 & ‘Truffle Butter’ sits at #16 after both gained 300+ & 500+ spins respectively. B.o.B‘s ‘Not For Long’ looks destined to hit top 10, as it sits at #13 after gaining 300 spins.

Chris Brown & Tyga‘s ‘Ayo’ is looking like a potential #1 hit, as the song already is at 15 after gaining over 568 spins, & J. Cole‘s ‘Apparently’ is at #17 and still gaining spins. Looking down the chart, Natalie La Rose‘s debut single ‘Somebody’ with Jeremih is performing just as well as projected, as it sits at #22 after only a few weeks on the radio. Kanye West‘s ‘duet’ with Paul McCartney ‘Only One’ lives at #29 after its first week after servicing. Childish Gambino‘s ‘Sober’ is at #37, & a little further down the top 50 you see tracks like The Weenkd‘s ‘Earned It’ at #43, Drake‘s free-release ‘How Bout Now’ at #44, Kid Ink‘s new single ‘Hotel’ at #45, & the last single from ScHoolboy Q‘s debut album ‘Hell of A Night’ at #46. Rihanna‘s new single with Kanye & McCartney ‘FourFiveSeconds’ debuts at #48 with 412 spins in under 72 hours. SHEESH! Lastly, Casey Veggies‘ debut label single ‘Backflip’ debuts in the top 50 at #48.
