2021 has left hip-hop in an ever weirder place. When the culture’s titans spend all year with petty beefs and albums that are just okay – and there’s a revolving door of new rappers to catch a moment, but rarely in a lasting fashion, it’s those different from the mold of the abundant. And while even using a popular sample you have to know from either Wu-Tang Clan or Ariana Grande, South Jersey newcomer Mudrigo flips this sample like you wouldn’t believe.
Mudrigo’s been perfecting his craft for years but it’s been his latest two singles “HOOD” and now “TEARS” that have been expertly marketed and executed to better make sure the people aren’t missing this. And it gives each song a much greater shelf life, and with proper time to keep building a truly addictive song has the potential to crawl into more and more earholes.
Sporting a Touré Douglas- produced visual, “Tears” features Mudrigo delivering one of the tightest and most high-energy performances hip-hop’s been graced with this year. The South Jersey rapper effortlessly flows over thundering bass signals and distorted vocal harmonies to deliver the culture what it’s been needing – something new. Simultaneously electrifying and instilled with laid-back swagger, Mudrigo is making his mark on 2021 with this new track, and with more music and visuals likely on the way – he’s somebody we’ll be keeping our eyes on.
