Middle Part – Harley

Brooklyn singer/songwriter Middle Part just dropped their first single of 2022, entitled “Harley.” The song is the first taste of their upcoming sophomore EP Time is Elastic.

“Harley” is a dreamy, indie-pop track with robust instrumental layering. The electric guitar melody takes center stage, but the knocking drums keep the listener engaged and a reverberating synth adds to the track’s wooziness. During the verse, we get a closer look at the bass line, as lead singer Andrew Selkōw paints a picture of a dreary mental state in just above a whisper.

Selkōw does mention the Harley Davidson motorcycle, but the song is more about Middle Part’s sonic reflection on choosing a career as an artist. “Harley” contrasts the difficulties of making a living off of one’s art with how difficult it would be mentally to do anything else. Interestingly enough, many of Middle Part’s upcoming songs were conceived in Alaska, where Selkōw spontaneously moved on a quest to find purpose years prior. Now residing on the East Coast, Middle Part is cementing themself in the ever-growing Brooklyn scene, working with local artists such as Richie Quake and Anna Shoemaker.
