Though 2022 is quickly winding down with major label titans scurrying back into hibernation, the independent and underground artists are taking no days off and keeping the culture alive and well. One such artist is Baltimore’s very own Gidi, who you may recognize from the Kehlani-cosigned “CHAINS” released earlier this fall. Featuring high-octane performances from both BH alum Merlyn Wood and Texas legend SoGone Flexy, Gidi synthesizes hip-hop, R&B, and a heavy dose of futurism into a track that *needs* to colonize your weekly rotation before the year is done.
For fans of polished visuals and iconoclastic energy, you’re in for a treat as well – for late last week, Gidi finally released “CHAINS”‘s visual. Directed by the man himself, “CHAINS” features Gidi and Merlyn joined by their homies while bringing their truly unique track to life. Though the track’s production lends the scene a distinct Y2K kind of energy, Gidi’s affinity for clever songwriting and distinct musical stylistics make this one of the most forward-thinking tracks I’ve heard this year. Whether basking underneath the strobe light or decorated with a vintage VHS film grain, Gidi makes a strong mark on 2022 before the holidays descend upon us. With more music and visuals likely planned for 2023, Gidi is an artist that needs to be on your radar sooner rather than later.
