Illusion Hills came together as a group of nine creative kids in the midst of quarantine somewhere in Southern Orange County. It’s a collective of artists who see the world differently, down to their graphic designer Salad and photographer Alyssa, who make sure that when you get a new Illusion Hills single, you’re getting hit with a full five sense punch. Their latest track “serena downtown” features battery acid, BROCKHAMPTON-esque beats and lyrics that capture the essence of a dream girl who’s just out of reach. Down to her dickies and heelys, “serena downtown” is much more than a song title, she’s a character. A thrill-seeking, ice cold, figment of all our imaginations who Illusion Hills brings back down to Earth.
Isaiah cuts in on the final verse with, “You said that you want me / Do you really? / I got some dog in me but I might just hurt your feelings.” With euphoric industrials and jam-packed lyrics that don’t waste a single word, “serena downtown” is an anthemic cherry bomb of illusive romance. With a prior streak opening for KennyHoopla at his sold out Santa Ana tour leg and sharing the stage with artists like Shy High and Tommy Richman, Illusion Hills are shooting for the moon.
