Jennifer Jeffries
You Were A Child

With a passionate, soul-filled voice well beyond her years, the 17-year-old singer and songwriter Jennifer Jeffries left a heartfelt, lasting impression on me with her newest single, “You Were A Child.” Having just performed the song live on American Idol, Jennifer Jeffries’ performance caught the attention of the likes of judges Luke Bryan and Katy Perry, as they donned the Starkville, Mississippi native a “diamond in the rough” of the contestants. Not only that but the tearjerker of a song got her a spot in the ongoing competition’s Top 24.

The song discusses the ever-evolving challenges that we as humans face with mental health, an important topic to Jeffries and her 8 siblings. The young folk indie artist pulls at your strings with lyrics like “So you write this song, and beautiful poetry so they’ll see something lovely, instead of broken things.” I surely hope to see Jennifer Jeffries push forward and do her best on American Idol, however, no matter what happens I would love to hear more from her, and her wonderful storytelling through evocative lyricism. We’ve seen many artists from the folk scene, like Oliver Anthony, pour their heart and soul into music as of late, and I’m glad to have come across the work of Jennifer Jeffries.
