I might make the argument that Fred Again… reignited the trend of making the Maschine drum machine cool again. As with every trend, masses of Tik Tok artists have now been implementing the drum machine in their content, smart on them for sure and it just shows off another level of artistry as well. However, that’s not quite the case with singer-songwriter and producer Kenya Grace; making videos with a midi controller of some kind in front of her is nothing new to the London-based musician and it’s clear just by watching this video and others that Kenya has put her hours in and the talent shows.
Self-taught in many aspects but accompanied with a formal music production education from the Academy of Contemporary Music Grace floats over self-produced drum beats with beautiful R&B melodies, something she does perfectly in her new single, “Afterpartylover”.
Released as a demo on her Soundcloud account, as well as a TikTok video of her sitting with her Maschine in hand and a microphone peeking from the side of the camera, the beat and instrumental have hints of Pinkpantheress inspiration with silky vocals.
With cold weather ahead and the holiday season upon us, “Afterpartylover” is warm and personal. Keep an eye on Kenya Grace, TikTok as it exists for music discovery has become derivative in all aspects, but Grace is delivering something original and compelling.
