Back in 2021, tg.blk had the music discovery nerds like myself in absolute awe with what she did on her song “Love Being Used”. Rap music especially in the more traditional, bars really matter sense had mostly fallen to the wayside to the youth aside from the more niche, Earl Sweatshirt type of rappers. But tg.blk really proved with that song alone that she could find a unique way to spaz on a sample beat and keep listeners hanging on every bar, all the while showing that she’s got a penchant for melody and really using her voice as a beautiful instrument itself. And the cherry on top of it all is that she was born and raised for most of her life in Kenya, yet she’s better at this thing than 99.99% of Americans.
That was two years ago and while only having two songs on DSPs ever since, tg.blk racked up 3.5M plays on that song and kept a consistent number of monthly listeners steadily tuning back in. But that drought of an only 2 song catalog is finally over as she unloaded a quick new song “NYDFRYSTL” this week. The sub-2-minute song is really just a “freestyle” and a small little tastebud appetizer before letting loose a lot more music in 2024. Atop another gorgeous sample, tg.blk rattles off bars like a river flows upstream, it just sounds and looks so damn effortless to her. Thus, now is the time to get hip before you start to hear name pop up all over the place. And if you’re a newly minted stan off of what you’ve heard here, there’s a trove of demos on her Soundcloud to hold you over until the calendar turns over into 2024.
